The Top of the Rock is probably one of the most picturesque spots in New York City and definitely one of my personal favorites! Who can resist those gorgeous views of Central Park AND the Empire State building? Not me, and I’m afraid of heights haha! However, navigating major NYC landmarks can be tricky when it comes to crowds: How am I supposed to get the perfect shot for Insta with a million tourists around?? I’ll tell you!
My 3 Rules for visiting the Top of the Rock.
1. Buy your ticket ahead of time.
When you book your Top of the Rock ticket you are given a specific entrance time. You can book your ticket online up to 3 hours in advance, so you can simply arrive at your designated time and head on up. Otherwise you run the risk waiting in line to buy your ticket, and not being able to go up for several hours or even that day if times are sold out.
2. Decide what kind of viewing experience you want.
- For great views of Central Park come during the daytime.
- To experience all of the bright city lights, including a great view of the Empire State Building, come during the evening.
- If you arrive shortly before sunset, you can enjoy both the day and night views.
-
- If you can’t decide – you can also purchase the Sun & Stars upgrade to be able to visit during the day and at night.
3. Visit on a weekday.
Weekday mornings are by far the least crowded time to go, and you will have great lighting for your photos.
PRO TIP: Have your photographer shoot you from the observation deck for great a aerial shot. There are also some great indoor photo opps – so keep your eyes peeled.
