To be honest, until about 6 months ago I never really gave lip injections a second thought. Then with all of the celebrity hoopla the procedure came on my radar, but more as another facet of celebrity spectacle than something I would consider having done. Don’t get me wrong there have been plenty of things I’m insecure about (my freakishly long torso, habitually sweaty palms, ‘chipmunk cheeks’, to name a few haha), but my lips just never were one of them.
So when I was approached to try out the new Restylane® Silk lip injection treatment, my first reaction was “you want to stick a needle where?? thanks, but no thanks.” But then I took a minute to think about it. One of my favorite parts of being a blogger is all of the crazy fun and exciting opportunities I would never get to experience otherwise. I’m not really opposed to minimally invasive surgical procedures, so why not do a little research and see if this could be something I want to try.
I like to think I have a black belt in Google stalking, and after a thorough investigation my curiosity was definitely piqued. My biggest fear was that I would look cartoonish or over done, but all of the before and after pictures I came across had very subtle soft enhancements. I also took the liberty of vetting Dr. Houshmand whose credentials speak for themselves. I decided ‘what the heck’ and booked the appointment.
Now is probably a great time to bring up my intense fear of needles. I didn’t get my ears pierced until 8th grade, have never considered a tattoo, and make my mom come with me every time I get a shot. Needless to say, when I arrived at the Skintastic offices (with mom in tow) I was feeling more than a little nervous. Luckily for me, the staff and Dr. Houshmand were super friendly and did their best to put me at ease.
After a thorough discussion about how I did NOT want to look like a pouting duck and examination of my lips, we were ready to begin. Once the numbing cream was on and had time to set, I really couldn’t feel a thing. After all that anticipation the actual procedure only lasted about 5 minutes and it really didn’t hurt at all. Even over the next several days I only experienced mild discomfort, but it was nothing a little Tylenol couldn’t help! Overall I am beyond thrilled with the results and I think it looks super soft and natural, just a little fuller and defined.

Important Safety Information
Indication: Restylane® Silk is indicated for submucosal implantation for lip augmentation and dermal implantation for correction of perioral rhytids in patients over the age of 21.
Restylane Silk contains traces of gram-positive bacterial protein and is contraindicated for patients with allergies to such material or for patients with severe allergies that have required in-hospital treatment. Restylane Silk should not be used by patients with bleeding disorders, with hypersensitivity to amide- type local anesthetics, such as lidocaine, under the age of 22, or by women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Restylane Silk should not be injected anywhere except the dermis or lip submucosa.
Use of Restylane Silk at the site of skin sores, pimples, rashes, hives, cysts, or infection should be postponed until healing is complete. The most commonly observed side effects are swelling, tenderness, bruising, pain, and redness at the injection site. These are typically mild in severity and resolve in 2-7 days after treatment. Serious but rare side effects include delayed onset infections, recurrence of herpetic eruptions, and superficial necrosis and scarring at the injection site. Do not implant into blood vessels. Use with caution in patients recently treated with anticoagulant or platelet inhibitors to avoid bleeding and bruising.
Treatment volume should be limited to 1.5 mL per lip per treatment and 1.0 mL for perioral rhytid correction, as greater amounts significantly increase moderate and severe injection site reactions. The safety or effectiveness of treatment in areas other than lips and perioral rhytids has not been established in controlled clinical studies.
Restylane Silk is only available through a licensed practitioner. Complete Instructions for Use are available at www.RestylaneSilk.com.
