However, not all books are created equal, and it can be tough to weed through the noise to find the truly valuable resources. That’s why I’ve rounded up my top picks for books about conceiving, pregnancy, and parenting, which have all helped me on my own journey.
Mama Natural Week to Week Guide to Pregnancy and Childbirth
First up, Mama Natural Week to Week Guide to Pregnancy and Childbirth. This book is a comprehensive guide to pregnancy that covers everything from nutrition and exercise to natural remedies for common ailments. What sets this book apart is its focus on natural solutions and approaches to pregnancy and childbirth, making it an excellent resource for moms-to-be who want to prioritize a more holistic approach. This was hands down one of the most valuable books for me during pregnancy. I loved her judgement free approach to some hot topics and felt very empowered to make some hard decisions after reading. I’ve given this book as a gift and lent my copy out countless times.
Sweet Sleep
As a new parent, one of the biggest challenges can be navigating the world of sleep. That’s where Sweet Sleep comes in. Written by La Leche League International, this book provides evidence-based advice on safe co-sleeping practices and how to help your baby (and yourself) get the best possible sleep. It’s an excellent resource for parents who want to prioritize a more natural approach to sleep and who are looking for practical tips to help their little ones rest easy. This was actually the book I was in the middle of when I went into labor a month early.
The Whole-Brain Child
Parenting is no easy feat, and it can be especially challenging to navigate the emotional ups and downs of a child’s early years. That’s where The Whole-Brain Child comes in. Written by Dr. Daniel J. Siegel and Dr. Tina Payne Bryson, this book offers practical strategies for helping your child develop emotional intelligence and self-regulation skills. It’s an excellent resource for parents who want to help their children build strong emotional foundations and navigate the ups and downs of life with more ease.

It’s an excellent resource for parents who want to deepen their understanding of themselves and their children, and who are looking for tools to help break negative patterns and build healthier relationships.

The author shares her own experiences of giving birth naturally and encourages women to trust their bodies and instincts. I read this book prior to getting pregnant and found the stories to be so powerful! It was definitely a big part of my wanting to pursue an intervention free birth when the time came.
Expecting Better
Expecting Better is a refreshing take on pregnancy and childbirth that challenges many of the traditional assumptions and recommendations around pregnancy. Written by economist Emily Oster, this book takes a data-driven approach to pregnancy and childbirth, offering evidence-based advice on everything from alcohol consumption to epidurals. I don’t see eye to eye with Emily on every topic but I appreciate her willingness to question old narratives and standards (even if we come to different conclusions). But I have to give props to anyone who doesn’t demonize deli meat during pregnancy ha!
Waiting in Wonder
Waiting in Wonder is a beautiful devotional book for expectant mothers. Written by Catherine Claire Larson, this book offers daily reflections and prayers to help moms-to-be connect with their growing babies and deepen their faith during pregnancy. It’s an excellent resource for moms-to-be who want to prioritize their spiritual growth during this special time.
